Sustainable compressed air production
Measurement campaign at the ABS QWR 4.0 plant
The core equipment of a compressed air plants (CAP) are compressors, for which electrical energy is the most predominant energy source.

In the light of the recent increase in energy supply costs, any form of energy reduction for industrial installations can bring significant savings in operating costs.

These are the main reasons why Danieli Environment and Systems (DESY) conducts a continuous critical review of the solutions currently in use, also in order to reduce the impact on the environment through the reduction of energy consumptions and introduction of more sustainable processes.

The compressed air plant serving the ABS QWR 4.0 rolling mill has been optimized to reduce energy consumptions, thanks to the combination of 2 fixed and 2 variable speed oil injected screw compressors, managed by an advanced control and monitoring system.
A data survey campaign was launched to evaluate the effectiveness of implemented solutions for energy saving, through the assessment of specific energy consumption related to compressed air production.

The collection of data of interest was carried out through dedicated power meters and compensated flow meters installed on the compressed air production equipment.

The measured specific energy consumption in kWh/Nm3 results to be 11% less than the value that would result in case if only fixed-speed compressors were to handle the same flowrate trend. This confirms the advantage of choosing a variable speed compressor in terms of energy consumption and OpEx reduction.

The above falls under Danieli approach, which is aimed at the continuous improvement of technological solutions towards energy saving and environmentally friendly practices, while keeping a focus on competitiveness and the needs of our customers.
