Sustainable Water Treatment with Zero Liquid Discharge
Reducing environmental footprint, complying with environmental regulations, and returning better quality water to the cycle
Reducing environmental footprint, complying with environmental regulations, and returning better quality water to the cycle
Danieli represents a reference for water recovery and water reuse in the steel market, with more than 10 working installations and others under design or proposal.
Thanks to our installed ZLD units, the recovered water is equivalent to the yearly water needs of about 40,000 families.
Recovered water from a ZLD unit has a better quality than the raw water, reducing scale and corrosion problems for the technological production plants.
The most evident advantage of this technology is that it is "environmentally friendly". The application of a ZLD plant will have tangible goal directly referred of water saved and other intangible advantages as per the table below:
- DESIGN AND STANDARDIZATION
With the most updated software design we produce 3D drawings and other documentations, making a fully integrated design: mechanical, electrical and civil, avoiding technical conflict and returning high value to the customer.
To improve and accelerate the erection activity the plant is supplied as a skid-mounted system, easy to transport, install and connect.
Skids will have all piping, instruments and cables on board. Only interconnections must be done, flange-to flange for hydraulics and to the junction box for the electrical connection.
Another advantage of the skid-mounted elements is that the individual parts are already tested in the factory.
On-site tasks like hydraulic and signal testing are simpler.
Standard ZLD units are available with capacities of 20, 40, 80 m3/h for incoming flow rate, single or multiple lines and other sizes or configurations will be customized upon request according to specific customers' cases and requests.
Plant automation will be integrated in the main WTP or pulpit of technological line. The software can incorporate the Q3-DEMS software to monitor power consumption and collect the working data and performance of the unit.
- A STEP AHEAD TO THE FUTURE
A new step already operating is not only to recover industrial water but to use new water sources that have not been considered before, like municipal sewage.
What is commonly considered a waste must be evaluated as raw material for industrial application. This is the aim of circular economy. Fresh water will remain available for human consumption. Danieli is already proceeding in this way, having supplied a plant for a new steel complex located in an arid location where no other water source was available.
The motto "Give water second life" was made for this.
- CONCLUSION
The future of water managing for industrial sustainability is the reuse of municipal wastewaters as a source for process water, combined with a ZLD plant to recover the water to the process again.
The available technology can handle any kind of polluted water. Danieli is always up-to-date using the Best Available Technology in its water treatment technologies for make-up, cooling, and water-recovery plants.
Now, to broaden the potential for the ZLD system the support of local authorities is needed, through tax and financial incentives. Danieli is available to deliver technical support to the customer in dialogue with the authorities to achieve this goal.

- OpEx savings. The recovered water is used to blend the makeup water, thus improving the quality of the cooling water and achieving consistent cost savings (minus 15-20% of makeup water costs).
- Access to public financing as a green technology.
- No needed for discharge authorization: no risk of delay of plant start up.
- No discharge limit to respect: no risk of production plant stoppage.
- No inlet water shortage: no risk of plant stoppage.
- Finally, the use of this technology reduces the plant's environmental footprint and improves the consideration of the local Environment Authorities.
